## How much do weddings cost? 
Covid-19 safety rules are set to change on 19 July, meaning that big weddings can finally take place once again in England, and venues are no longer required to enforce safety rules and provide hand gel and other precautionary supplies.

Weddings are already expensive with the average cost in the UK already totalling more (£30,000¹) than a typical annual salary ². With brides and grooms now responsible for implementing their own Covid-safety measures to protect their guests, this could add more than £5,000 (£5,305)* to the total cost of their wedding day, increasing the average budget by almost a fifth (18%) ¹, according to a new study. 

From lateral flow tests to temperature checks, hand sanitiser stations to disposable masks, and the average number of wedding guests sitting at 78 in 2020³, costs for these additions can soon add up for couples opting to absorb these costs within their own wedding day budgets. We’ve calculated the average cost of each optional safety measure that brides and grooms-to-be may now have to think about, and budget for in 2021 and beyond when planning their big day.

### Lateral flow tests — from £64 for a pack of 72⁴ 
Although they’re not as accurate as a PCR test, lateral flow tests can show if someone is infectious with Covid-19 at that particular time. This means they can be taken in the lead up to and on the day of the wedding by guests, to help identify if they may need to go and get a PCR test and self-isolate. 

As mentioned, these are not 100% accurate, but they could be sent out to guests to use ahead of the wedding for additional peace of mind.

### PCR testing — from £65 at home / £99 in store⁵
More accurate than a lateral flow test, the 48-hour PCR test is being used as proof of a negative Covid test for those looking to travel in 2021. That said, they do come at a cost, so for those looking to test all guests ahead of your wedding day, budgeting is key as these may add up to a hefty amount depending on the size of the wedding party.

First, make a list of all the items you want to sell. Inspect the condition of all your things and make sure everything is working as it should. Try and make your objects as “sell-ready” as possible. ## Pick your platform

Some platforms are also better than others for selling specific items, so consider this when choosing your platform: 

- eBay is good for electronics, antiques, jewelry, designer shoes, vintage clothing and handbags.
- Old records and books are great to sell on Amazon.
- Art, crafts and wall decor do well on Etsy.
- Ziffit is good for selling games, books, CDs and DVDs.
- Sell clothing on Depop.
- Shpock is great for home appliances, electronics and clothing. 
- Facebook groups might work better for old furniture. 

On this note, don’t discount social media platforms or your networks like your friends and followers on Instagram. Try Facebook Marketplace or even reaching out to colleagues first. ## Create your listing

Be sure to include plenty of high-quality photographs, too, as part of your listing — this is especially important if you’re selling clothing or jewelry. ## Consider shipping costs
Before you add a price tag to your listing, make sure you account for any packaging and shipping costs for mailing your items. Otherwise, this could easily eat into any profit you hope to make. eBay, for example, offers a postage estimator service. As Covid-19 restrictions start to lift, we’re finally allowed to go out and enjoy a cold pint in a beer garden again, get our nails done and get rid of that lockdown hair.

However, our recent poll of 1,000 UK residents has revealed that over half (51%) are concerned about how much more they’ll start spending now that restrictions are being lifted. Of these, it seems those aged 25–34 are the most worried (72%), alongside residents of London (67%).

With this in mind, we’ve put together a few tips to help you stay in control of your outgoings while enjoying a little slice of long-awaited normality.

## Budget
As we start spending less time at home, it’s inevitable that some of our “extra” expenses will go up again. Of course, rent and bills come first, but we all need a little something to splurge on after so many months being stuck indoors! Our survey has revealed that people think they’ll spend the most money in restaurants (45%), at shops and shopping centres (43%), at pubs and bars (37%) and at hairdressers or barbers (36%).

Whether it’s pints with friends or a shopping spree, make sure you calculate how much you can afford to spend on any additional luxuries each month. More often than not, though, you may change your mind or decide you’d actually rather to wait until you’ve saved up for it.

## Hide social media ads
Spending will power is hard to maintain, especially when we're bombarded with targeted adverts on social media all the time. But you can hide these if you’re worried you'll be tempted to splash your cash. On Facebook and Instagram, you can click the three dots in the top right-hand corner of the ad to select a hide option.

## Try budget-friendly outings  
You don’t need to splurge on dinner and drinks to be sociable with friends. Instead, you could organise a picnic in your local park. It’ll work out much cheaper than dining out and will still feel really special after weeks of being stuck at home!

## Shop second-hand 
If you’re looking forward to a long-awaited night out, you might be considering buying a new outfit. However, rather than hitting the shopping centre, you could look around your local charity shops first. With so many people having clearouts during lockdown, you might be surprised at what you unique, low-cost treasures could be waiting for you! You’re also helping a charity too, so it's a win-win.

The Brexit transition period officially ended on 31 December 2020. The new rules and regulations that came in place since — particularly around parcels and deliveries — have caught many of us off-guard. 

Buyers who’ve purchased from the EU and vice versa are being hit with unexpected fees upon delivery of their packages. Couriers are showing up at doorsteps demanding, in some cases, [more than £100 in import duties](https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2021/jan/21/britons-buying-from-eu-websites-face-more-than-100-import-duties "The Guardian - Britons buying from EU websites hit with £100 customs bills"). And in Europe, clients are also being asked to pay [customs tariffs, handling fees and VAT](https://www.bbc.com/news/business-55752541 "BBC - Brexit parcel price shock: 'I had to pay £30 for a gift'") to receive their parcels. 

While it's still quite the bureaucratic headache, we've gathered advice and information on what you need to know when shopping online for items shipped between the UK and the EU after Brexit.

## First, what are the fees? 
The [UK government](https://www.gov.uk/guidance/vat-and-overseas-goods-sold-directly-to-customers-in-the-uk "VAT and overseas goods sold directly to customers in the UK") has outlined tax and duty information for goods sent from abroad, including EU countries, following Brexit. 

A 20% UK VAT now applies to almost everything from the EU, including gifts, second-hand items and Amazon/eBay products bought from private sellers. Gifts over £39 will come with the UK sales tax, and if it’s over £135, custom duties will also apply if the goods 'originate' from outside the UK and EU, which can be as much as [25%](https://www.walesonline.co.uk/whats-on/shopping/couriers-refusing-hand-over-parcels-19682053 "WalesOnline - Couriers are refusing to hand over parcels bought from Europe if people don't pay extra charges"). The UK VAT can be collected at the time of purchase if it’s under £135. Still, it'll be due at the time of delivery or at the point of entry if it's over this limit. 

For fee information on the reverse scenario (i.e., ordering from the UK to the EU), we suggest visiting your particular country’s government website before purchasing for details on any applicable sales tax and custom tariffs for imported items from the UK. 

Additionally, some courier firms may charge an additional fee to cover extra handling costs. This could be a flat fee or a small percentage of the total price of your item.  

Here are just a few examples of the costs you could be paying:

*__Buying a £150 jacket from France__*
- You'll be charged VAT of £30 (20% of £150) at time of delivery (i.e., on the doorstep) or when the good arrives in the UK 
-   You may also have pay up to 25% in custom duties if parts of the jacket originate from outside of the UK or EU, which could be as much as £37.50 
-   The courier firm may charge a fee

- You'll be charged VAT of £10 (20% of £50) at point of sale 
- VAT gift exemption only applies to items worth £39 or less 
- The courier firm may charge a fee

## Tips before buying
Here are the top things you need to know the next time you plan on ordering something from the UK or EU now that the Brexit transition period has come to an end. 

### Do your research 
While it’s common for online retailers to have a localised website, you’ll need to do some digging beyond the homepage to find out where the items you want to purchase are actually located and coming from. 

In some instances, people browsing a localised UK website thought they were buying their items from the UK but in fact, were coming from Europe. Hence, to their surprise, they were subject to the new shipping fees. The same is true for EU buyers who thought they were purchasing items from within the EU because they bought from an EU version of a retailer’s site with prices displayed in euros, but in fact was a UK company with items shipped from the UK.   

### Watch out for foreign exchange fees
Some EU-based retailers may only transact in euros (and vice-versa, if you're based in the EU and shopping in the UK). If so, you could end up paying any VAT or custom fees in euros (or vice-versa), which might result in foreign exchange and/or bank charges. Avoid this by paying in your local currency where you can, or use your Monese EUR/GBP account to pay for your orders. ### Read the terms and conditions
Online shops like [Amazon](https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/customer/display.html/?nodeId=201910710 "About Import Fees Deposit") and [eBay](https://www.ebay.co.uk/help/buying/paying-items/paying-tax-ebay-purchases?id=4771#:~:text=Value%20Added%20Tax%20(VAT)%20generally%20applies%20to%20purchases%20by%20EU,pay%20VAT%20and%20customs%20duty "Paying tax on eBay purchases") have stated that they’ll start to charge the VAT at the time of purchase for orders to the UK and vice versa. But you'll still need to be careful when ordering from other shops online as not all have implemented this tactic yet. 

You’ll be required to pay up before receiving any packages. Even if you reject the box because you refuse to pay the new extra charges, firms are changing their terms and conditions. Some state you're liable for the supplementary costs, regardless of whether you reject and return the parcel. So read the fine print before buying. 

At the same time, make sure you have a clear understanding of the return, refund, exchange and order cancellation policies before buying any items. 

### Keep your receipts
If you know you’ve already been charged the full VAT at the time of purchase, don’t pay it again if a courier demands it. Show proof of payment on your receipt (like on your order confirmation email) and reject the parcel. Then, contact the company and explain they didn’t declare the VAT properly and you were unable to receive your item. 

### Pick up in-store 
One way to avoid any extra charges upon delivery to your home could be to pick up your purchases in-store. This is an option if the retailer has physical stores in your country.   

### Know your rights 
If you’re in the UK, your [consumer rights](https://www.which.co.uk/consumer-rights/advice/how-will-brexit-affect-my-consumer-rights "How will Brexit affect my consumer rights?") will be unchanged following Brexit, even when shopping in the EU. However, any disputes around hidden costs and the like can no longer be settled in UK courts. Instead, it’ll have to be resolved in the courts of the country where the seller is located, making it more challenging. Likewise, your EU consumer protection legislation may no longer apply in the UK if you’ve bought something from a UK business and an issue arises. 

If you want to return an item later on, be aware that some additional charges may apply if you’re sending something back to the EU or vice versa. 

### Be vigilant of scams
Fraudsters are taking advantage of all the confusion and uncertainty and targeting recipients with SMS messages asking them to pay for the release of parcels, etc. Double-check any messages and don’t click on links you’re suspicious or unsure of. If you’re not sure about fees you’re being charged, it’s best to call the courier company using an official number to verify the charges and what you owe.  

### Shop locally 
Suppose you truly want to avoid the hassle of these new taxes and customs charges. In that case, it's best to avoid shopping from abroad at all — at least until things iron themselves out, which could be a while as businesses get used to the new rules. If you’re in the EU, shop locally or from other EU countries, and if you’re in the UK, buy from shops you’re sure are UK retailers.

Whether you get paid weekly, fortnightly, or monthly, it’s important to know exactly what money you expect to receive and what your consistent ‘essential’ costs are. These are things like your rent/mortgage, bills and food shopping.

It wouldn’t be surprising if the plans and budgets you set for yourself back then didn’t make sense anymore. And while budgeting can be stressful enough, it can be even trickier amid an ongoing pandemic. 

Nonetheless, it’s always a good idea to go back and reevaluate your budget to set yourself up for better spending habits in a post-Covid-19 world. So with that in mind, we’ve gathered some areas of your budget that may need another look to help get you through the last few months of 2020.

It’s no secret that due to the coronavirus pandemic, it’s been a difficult time for many people worldwide. Some folks have been hit particularly hard financially, causing lots of stress on many households. While easier said than done, it’s important not to panic. When it comes to making crucial financial decisions, you need to have a clear mind to think things through thoroughly and not hastily. With that being said, here are some things you should and shouldn’t do when it comes to managing your personal finances during this ongoing crisis.

## Revisit your budget
Covid-19 took the whole world by surprise. Since it’s something many of us didn’t account for, it’s the perfect time to revisit those [money goals](https://monese.com/blog/2020/01/savings-goals-2020) you set out for yourself at the start of the year. Take a look at what needs adjusting and come up with a game plan to make it happen. You’ll feel much better and more in control of your financial situation once you’ve modified where needed!

## Review the services you’re paying for
Similarly, if money is tight at the moment due to the coronavirus crisis, this might be a good time to prioritise the [services](https://monese.com/blog/2020/04/keep-spending-in-check-self-isolating) and subscriptions you’re still paying for. ## Rely on your savings (and increase them if you can)

If you’re still working and able, continue to put money away — no one knows what the long-lasting effects of this outbreak will be, so it’s best to be prepared. Your savings goal should be between three to six months’ worth of household expenses (but if you can aim for more, the better).

## Use credit cards wisely
If you don’t have enough money tucked away for this period and need to rely on credit cards, do so at a minimum and only for purchasing essential items. If you must, you may also consider applying for a higher limit. Make sure you’re paying back at least the minimum amount each month. It might also be worth it to get in touch with your credit card company during this period. Some might be able to waive fees or interest rates under the current circumstances.

## Research government assistance programs
Many governments around the world are offering relief programs during the pandemic that you could be eligible for. If you need a break on student loans, mortgage, car, rent or utility payments, visit your official government websites to see what sort of grants they're providing. But as you research, be vigilant about the websites you’re visiting. There have been many fake sites created to [scam](https://monese.com/blog/2020/03/avoiding-coronavirus-scams) vulnerable people during these desperate times.

## Manage money from your mobile
During this pandemic, it’s essential we listen to our governments and health officials and practice social distancing by staying home. They're instrumental as they can keep you from racking up unnecessary credit card debt or taking out loans you really can't afford when something urgent comes up. A good rule of thumb is to have enough savings to pay necessary expenses for three to six months (but the more the better). If you do have a cash cushion built up and have been able to rely on it during this crisis, great! But if you don’t, not to worry. In this post, we’ll explain how you can still save during the pandemic and slowly but surely start to build that emergency fund for the long-term.

### Set a goal
To start building your emergency fund, the first thing you should do is set a target of how much it is you’d like to save. If you’re just starting, your goals can be low, to begin with. This will help keep you motivated each time you reach a milestone. Then you can gradually increase your objective as you start to reach your smaller goals or as your financial situation improves. Small businesses, independent workers and employees in industries that rely heavily on tips are unquestionably the most vulnerable in times like these and likely to take the biggest hits. That’s why it’s more important than ever to support local businesses in our communities. 

At the same time, it’s also a good chance to review some of your regular spending and find out where you could afford to cut back. Here are some tips to get you started...

### Gym membership
If you're stuck at home, there are countless [at-home workouts](https://www.businessinsider.com/best-free-virtual-workouts) you can find online and do right in your living room. So should you still be paying for a pricey gym membership? While many large gyms have put membership fees on hold (since they’re closed due to Covid-19), if you’re used to getting your workouts in at the local yoga studio or a smaller gym in your neighbourhood, they might need all the income they can get right now. 

Don’t cancel direct debit payments to help support smaller gyms and fitness instructors. Many places are offering credit or discounts in the long-term as an option, instead. Some small gyms are even offering live virtual classes in exchange for members paying whatever they think is fair. 

### Houseworkers
If you have a sitter, dog walker, cleaner, gardener or other houseworker, for their safety and yours, they might need to stay home for a little while. You could offer to still pay them, even if they can’t show up to your home for the time being. Instead, you could come up with a payment plan that you’re both happy with. For example, you could offer to pay them in full now, and get your money back later, in installments. Remember that for many people, this is what they rely on to take care of and provide for their own families. 

### Laundry and dry cleaning
Many people opt for additional services from their local laundromat such as dry cleaning because we’re too busy to do this ourselves and because we need our pressed, clean clothes each week for heading into work. But given that many people are working remotely these days, this is one additional thing you’ll certainly be spending less on. To still support your local laundromat, do your wash and dry with them as you’d normally do (even if it’s fewer clothes than usual), and support them by buying packages to use later on (such as for extras like steaming and ironing).

### Extra channels and other subscriptions
Whether it’s magazine subscriptions, paid apps, cable, expensive sports channels or multiple streaming services, this might be an excellent time to review everything you’re signed up for or have downloaded. Only keep what you’re most interested in and what you’re actually making use of &mdash; and put all the rest on pause. Or you may even consider downgrading and finding plans that actually work out better for you. 

It might also be a fantastic time to renegotiate your services. From your phone contract to your broadband subscription, many companies would rather offer you a better deal than lose you as a customer. Therefore, take advantage of this time to make a few extra phone calls to your service providers. It’ll be worth it as it can end up saving you some cash each month!

### Travel and holidays
When it comes to planned holidays, whether to [cancel or postpone your travel plans](https://monese.com/blog/2020/03/covid-19-travel-disruption) completely depends on your individual situation. Some accommodation websites, such as Airbnb, are offering full refunds on any bookings. But if you’re indifferent about when you travel and can reschedule your holiday, you can accept one of the flexible options that many companies are offering instead of cancelling. 

For example, many airlines are providing passengers with new travel dates or even vouchers which could be used for up to a year. It’s best to check your airline or travel agency's website for updates on what they can do for you under the circumstances. 

### Food delivery
Some people might hesitate to order food right now from local restaurants via popular delivery services like Uber Eats or Deliveroo, for fear of contamination and spread of the virus. However, in response to the outbreak, many of these companies have put in place extra measures for the protection of you and their employees. For example, many now include a contactless delivery option where your food can be left at the door. If you want to be extra cautious, pick up any food deliveries with gloves on, dispose of the packaging and wash your hands before eating. 

In general, though, the risk of contamination is said to be quite low when it comes to food delivery. Therefore, many experts say you can continue ordering food from your favourite apps. Many delivery workers depend on this job as their main source of income, so keep paying for your favourite meals and tip generously (you’re likely saving big on dining out anyway). 

### Daycares, summer camps and children’s classes
If you’ve signed your kids up for extracurricular activities, whether it’s dance, sports or summer workshops, consider postponing the classes instead of asking for a refund. Many small schools and local community organisations count on these enrollment fees to keep their programs up and running. Plus, many of the instructors will need this money now more than ever, so opt for a reschedule if you can. 

### Your morning coffee
You may be at home, thinking about all the extra money you’re saving by making your own morning cappuccino versus stopping into your local coffee shop on your way to work each morning. While this is a great way to save right now, you may want to think about buying gift cards at your corner store bakery, small coffee shop, neighbourhood pub or even local boutique to support community businesses in their time of need. You can then use your gift cards later, once everything’s returned to normal. 

Some coffee houses also sell their own pods for popular coffee machines, so it might be a good idea to stock up on some of your favourites!

There are many people who choose to work from home on occasion. Other times, everyone, including those who aren’t used to working remotely, are strongly encouraged (or obliged) to work from home. In these cases, even those who’ve occasionally worked from home could experience a startling new shift due to prolonged periods inside. That’s why we’re sharing some essential work-from-home tips to help you keep cool if stuck indoors.

### Create your space
Find a comfortable place in your home that’ll function as your exclusive workspace. Remember that you’ll want to keep your relaxation spaces and “work” space separate. This means avoid your bed, bedroom and sofa, if possible. Ideally, you’ll have a chair and desk (or a kitchen or dining room table will do). If feasible, make this space somewhere near a window or balcony. While you may be stuck inside, it’s always nice and healthy to get some natural light streaming through. It can also help keep you alert and boost your overall mood too!

Our Paralegal Ella has found another cool way to spruce up her workspace while working remotely. “I bought a scented candle, some nice plants and flowers to make my workspace cozier and prettier”, she said. “It makes a difference for me and just makes things more positive. Plus plants are good for the air quality in your home”!

If you’re working from home with a partner or spouse, you may also want to set a designated “meeting” room. This way, you’ll each have somewhere private to go when you need to take or make calls without disrupting the other. 

Finally, before you settle in, make sure you have all the tools you need in your area to be as productive as possible throughout your day. 

### Keep it clean
You may feel more comfortable leaving dirty coffee mugs around your workspace now that you’re at home, and there are no colleagues around to judge you. As tempting as it may be, try not to do so. Keep your workspace at home as tidy as possible. Having too much clutter around your new space will only distract you and make you less productive. It can even have an impact on your ability to process information. 

### Follow a routine

It’s important to have a set routine when working remotely. While it may be tempting to roll out of bed, grab your laptop and start working, having a routine in the morning will help give your day some normality. Wake up on time, make your bed, shower, get dressed (remember you’ll still want to look presentable for video calls), eat a healthy breakfast and then get started with your workday. This will help your days go a lot smoother. 

### Set boundaries
If you have children or a partner at home, communicate your working hours and areas, so they know when not to disturb you and which areas of the house to avoid. To help you stay focused and avoid any noisy distractions, you may want to work with some earplugs or noise-cancelling headphones. Boundaries can also be ones you set with yourself. Our QA Chapter Lead Leonel says: “Avoid watching news updates all day to keep you positive and sane. Instead, pick certain times of the day where you check in and then... turn off”!

### Stay in touch (virtually)
Working from home can quickly make you feel out of touch with colleagues and totally isolated. Therefore, take advantage of tools like Slack, Zoom, WhatsApp, Skype, FaceTime, Hangouts and so on. Hop on a quick call (or better yet, a video call) with a coworker if you need some human connection (figuratively speaking, of course). 

Our Lead Market Development Manager, Estefania, also reminds us to be understanding when it comes to this new form of communication with our colleagues. “We need to have some patience with the wifi connection”, she explains. “In Spain, for example, it’s completely saturated, so video calls don’t always work properly”. So if someone’s camera freezes or their microphone isn’t working properly, just laugh it off! As frustrating as it may be sometimes, remember that your team is doing their best. 

### Take breaks

Just like when working in the office, it’s good to take breaks from your workspace. Get up, walk around, stretch your legs and do something else that isn’t work-related for 5–15 minutes.

> My favourite break activity is cleaning up. Every time I feel I need five minutes away from my laptop, I go and put a wash on or do the dishes.

Our Content and Community Manager Karolina shares her tip for taking breaks. “My favourite break activity is cleaning up. Every time I feel I need five minutes away from my laptop, I go and put a wash on or do the dishes”, she said. “That turns my mind completely off, and I can come back to work fully charged. Plus, once I’m done working, I don’t have to do the cleaning anymore”!

Make sure you take time for lunch as well. Recruiter Gaili advises: “Block your lunchtime on your calendar &mdash; this way, your coworkers will know not to schedule any meetings with you during this hour”.

You’ll also want to eat foods to boost your immune system. Our Paid Media Specialist Puneet suggests: “Make yourself a nice home-cooked meal - not just microwave meals”. Don’t forget to stay hydrated too and drink plenty of water! 

### Stop working
Overworking is the fastest way to drive yourself crazy, especially when working from home. It’s easy to lose track of time when working remotely. Set alarms and timers, so you know when to sign off and shut off. 

Our Head of Design Joe shares his trick for helping his brain make the switch from “work” to “home” life.

Our Credit Product Analyst Jagoda proposes finding a new pastime to help you unwind once you’ve finished work for the day. “Find a hobby you enjoy to help you relax, such as yoga, reading, knitting, playing cards or a board game”.

### Exercise
Many of us already live a rather sedentary lifestyle &mdash; and working remotely promotes this even more so. Working from home means missing out on your daily commute to work and cuts into the little walking you may do as you head into the office, bus stop or tube station. That’s why it’s even more important to include some physical activity during your days working remotely. And don’t think you need a full-scale gym either to [break a sweat](https://www.bbc.com/sport/get-inspired/32416767) at home!

When people think of discrimination, they probably think of prejudiced treatment based on race, age or nationality. But did you know that there’s such a thing as IBAN discrimination too? While we hope this is something you never have to face, we want our community to be prepared for anything. We want to help you know what to do and the right steps to take in unfair situations such as these. 

But what exactly is IBAN discrimination, anyway? 

IBAN discrimination is when an employer, merchant or any other company in SEPA (the Single Euro Payments Area) refuses to accept your SEPA-enabled IBAN for euro payments or direct debits. This can happen when transacting online or in person and the organisation or salesperson is in direct violation of European law. So if this happens to you, what can you do about it? 

First, let’s start with some basics.

## What’s an IBAN?

IBAN, an internationally agreed-upon system, stands for International Bank Account Number and is associated with most bank accounts around the world. An IBAN is made up of up to 34 letters and numbers, which includes a country code, two-digit check number, branch identifier and account number. 

If you’re based in the UK, your Monese EUR account’s IBAN will have the GB country code. If you live outside of the UK (with the exception of France), your IBANs will start with BE. For account holders in France, your IBANs start with GB for the time being, but we’ll be able to update you on a better solution soon, so stay tuned.

## What’s an IBAN used for?

The IBAN is used to help identify bank accounts locally or across borders. With your Monese EUR account, you use your IBAN to send and receive domestic and international euro payments across SEPA countries. They include all the EU countries plus Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, San Marino, Monaco, Andorra, Vatican City and the United Kingdom. Essentially, it’s so that there isn’t a difference between national and international payments.

The benefit is that you can make and receive payments in euros without having to open multiple accounts. For example, if you're working abroad in the EU or wish to pay utilities in another country that’s part of SEPA, you can receive your salary and pay bills with your home country's IBAN.

## Where do I find my Monese IBAN?

You can find your EUR account’s IBAN on the Monese app under ‘Account details’. This IBAN will work for any SEPA transfers. If you need to receive money from outside the SEPA area, you’ll find your international bank transfer details here too. The payment delivery time usually takes around 1–3 business days. We don’t charge a fee for this but be aware that the sending bank may charge you a fee for transfers.

## What can I do if my IBAN is refused?

All organisations, employers and merchants operating in SEPA countries are obligated to accept IBANs from all SEPA member countries. IBAN discrimination is banned by law, as mentioned above. 

If your IBAN is refused because of length, country code or any other reason, try and explain to the seller, business or employer that the rejection is illegal. It could be that they’re misinformed or their IT systems haven’t been properly updated to accept certain IBANs. 

If this doesn’t solve the issue, try sending a formal, written complaint. If they’re still refusing to comply and your IBAN is still not accepted, make sure you try to get some documented proof of the rejection, whether that’s written, a screenshot or any other interaction you’ve had with them. 

Armed with this information, you can better support your explanation when you report them to your [local authority](https://ec.europa.eu/info/sites/info/files/art10-competent-authorities-05072013_en_0.pdf). Be sure to provide them with as much information as possible, the company’s details and how they can best reach you. 
Remember: you have the law on your side, so don’t be afraid to speak up if you feel like you’re being treated unfairly.

### You’ll avoid problems later

But before buying your one-way ticket, there are essential things to know and consider to help make your new start in Portugal as smooth as possible.

From applying for a visa to setting up an account in Lisbon, Monesers working out of our Lisbon office (many of whom are foreigners themselves) share their insight to help you on your exciting expat adventure.

### Fast facts
- Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in the world &mdash; older than Paris, London, and Rome.
- It hasn’t always been the Portuguese capital. Before Lisbon came Guimarães, Coimbra... and Rio de Janeiro! 
- The city was subject to one of the deadliest earthquakes in history: the Great Lisbon earthquake of 1755. 
- The timezone in Lisbon is Western European Standard Time (WET), same timezone as the UK. 
- Lisbon has a subtropical, typical Mediterranean climate, with an average annual daytime temperature of more than 20°C!

### Cost of living

It’s crucial to have a general sense of what the [cost of living](https://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/in/Lisbon) is like in Lisbon before moving. This way, you know how much to save and budget for before jetting off. Lisbon is known for being an ideal tourist and expat destination thanks to its rather low prices. For example, you can get an espresso (colloquially known as a *bica* in Lisbon) for less than €1 and a nice meal for two for around €35. That’s two times less than what you’d typically pay in London or Paris. But while cheap, you must also remember that the average salary in Lisbon is just €860.

Björn from Sweden: “An awesome trick to reduce your costs is to buy groceries during promotions and discounts. Every week, various supermarkets offer different promotions with up to 50% discount, so be on the lookout for those”.

### Apply for a visa
You’ll first need to check if you need a visa to move to Lisbon. Portugal is a member state of the European Union (EU) and the European Economic Area (EEA). This means all EU/EEA nationals are welcome to enter the country with only their national ID cards. You will, however, need a residence certificate if you’re planning to stay longer than three months. 

Additionally, the country’s immigration policy also includes several international agreements with non-EU countries such as Australia, Brazil, Canada and the US. These agreements allow citizens from these countries to enter and stay in Portugal for up to 90 days. If you don’t come from one of the countries with an agreement, you’ll most likely need a residence visa and, depending on your situation, other [documents](https://gotoportugal.eu/en/visa-to-portugal/), including: 

- an acceptance letter from educational institute if you want to study in Lisbon 
- a contract of employment if you’re going to work or conduct research in Lisbon

Marina from Brazil: “I came to Lisbon on a student visa first. Once I found a job with a working contract, I became eligible for a residence permit. To apply for your visa or residence permit, be organised well in advance with the documents you’ll need to present at [SEF](https://www.sef.pt/pt/Pages/homepage.aspx), Portugal’s immigration service. You’ll want to book your appointment at SEF as early as possible as slots fill up fairly quickly”.

### Get a NIF 

If you’re planning on living and working in Lisbon, one of the first things you’ll need to obtain is a NIF. This is a tax identification number which you will need to legally work, rent an apartment, pay utility bills or even get a phone subscription. You’ll need to go to the nearest [Finanças](https://www.portaldasfinancas.gov.pt/at/html/index.html) with your ID and proof of address (either from Portugal or your home country). Keep in mind that if you’re deemed a non-resident or from outside the EU, you’ll likely need to appoint a fiscal representative who you should bring with you. After you successfully get your NIF, you’ll be able to start enjoying the benefits of being an officially recognised taxpayer in Portugal. 

Melissa (your humble author) from Canada: “After obtaining your NIF, be sure to apply for the non-habitual resident tax regime on the *Finanças* online portal if eligible. Highly skilled expats can receive a flat 20% income tax rate for ten years! Be sure to apply on time as well. You have until March 31”.

### Find housing

Lisbon is one of the most popular destinations for expats. With a surge of tourists and foreign investors, it’ll be tricky to find long-term accommodation straight away. This is true not only in the city centre, but the suburbs as well. With that in mind, you might want to book a short-term rental for the first several weeks of your stay. This way, you can start looking for a more permanent apartment once you’ve arrived in Lisbon and have had a chance to visit places in person. 

Many estate agents and private landlords operate on a first-come, first-served basis. To help with your search, try popular websites such as [imovirtual](https://www.imovirtual.com/), [Casa Sapo](https://casa.sapo.pt/), [Idealista](https://www.idealista.com/) or [BQuarto](https://www.bquarto.pt/) as well as Facebook groups. Don’t be shy about calling instead of emailing! Be aware that fraudsters and scammers have also been trying to capitalise on the popularity of the Portuguese city. Therefore, proceed with caution and be wary of anything that seems too good to be true.

Mathilde from France: “Living in the Portuguese capital is lovely but be prepared for a cold house during winter months. Most apartments in Lisbon don’t have heaters, so adjusting to a cold house is something that newcomers may find difficult. In the end, I did manage to convince my landlord to get me an air conditioner that doubles as a heater, so it’s worth asking”!

### Work in Lisbon
While finding an apartment may be difficult, landing a job shouldn’t be! Lisbon has been one of the most popular and fastest-growing tech hubs over the past several years. It’s no surprise many startups decide to make the Portuguese capital home to their headquarters. ### Getting around

No matter if you’re lucky enough to find an apartment in the city centre or something in the suburbs, you likely won’t need a car. Streets in Lisbon are both incredibly challenging to drive on and crowded anyway due to them being quite narrow. Luckily, public transportation is well-developed, which makes commuting to work easy and convenient, even if you live on the other side of the river or on the outskirts. You can choose from several metro lines, buses, trains, as well as ferries and trams. We do recommend leaving the latter for tourists as trams can get considerably crowded. You can use the same monthly pass to commute to work each morning and get to the beach on the weekend!

### Make friends
Leaving loved ones behind is never easy, and being on your own in a new country is daunting. But there’s no need to worry! ### Plan and set goals

### Get rid of debt
To start saving, the first step is to get rid of your debt as soon as possible. Whether it’s a credit card or a loan, make it one of your goals to fully pay off at least one of your debts in 2020. Figure out how much you owe and what percentage you can realistically put towards paying off that debt each month. 

### Set a budget

Don’t get spooked about your savings

With the sun shining without interruption across much of Europe, many of our holiday plans are now in full swing.

Being a financial service, we’re probably not the best go-to source for general travel advice, at least in terms of recommending destinations (although we’re confident enough in extolling the virtues of wearing lots of sunscreen).

Wherever you choose to holiday this year however, we’re happy to offer you a few tips on how to use your card while travelling abroad.

### Pay in the local currency

First off, we recommend paying in the local currency whenever possible. Holidaymakers collectively and unknowingly amass millions of pounds in unnecessary fees when paying by card due to something called [‘dynamic currency conversion’ (DCC)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynamic_currency_conversion "Wikipedia"). These are alternative exchange rates offered by firms handling transactions in anything other than the local currency. 

In real terms, a round of drinks at a beach bar could be costing you [up to 18% more](https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/team-blog/2016/07/the-worst-paying-in-pounds-abroad-rip-off-ive-seen-where-160-of-cash-costs-190/ "Money saving expert: The worst ‘paying in pounds abroad’ rip-off I’ve seen – where £160 of cash costs £190"). This applies to both card payments and ATM withdrawals.

Choosing to pay in the local currency means your home bank handles the currency conversion - which means it will be far more closely aligned to the ‘true’ currency conversion rate, therefore making it far cheaper in most cases. This is especially true when managing your money with Monese, where you access our wholesale currency exchange rate and low fees.

### Lock your card 

Another good idea, specific to the use of your Monese card, is to keep your card locked whenever you’re not using it. Locking your card is an easy-to-use security feature accessible within the Monese app. One thing to remember, however, is that you will need data connectivity on your phone in order to unlock. With this in mind, it’s also a good idea to keep your phone charged.

Locking your card is also the first thing you should do if you misplace your card. That way, if someone tries to illicitly use it, they won’t be able to complete any transactions and the app will immediately let you know about any unsuccessful attempts.

### Carry a spare card

While it’s generally a good recommendation to travel light financially, you may also want to consider packing another card. As a Monese user, we can quickly provide you with the means to do this. By opening a free secondary Euro IBAN account (or UK current account if you already have the Euro IBAN account) you can order a Euro card as back-up, and you’ll be able to transfer funds to it from your primarily Monese account in-app, instantly.
