The United Kingdom [left the European Union](https://monese.com/gb/en/blog/brexit-update) at the end of January. Since then there’s been a period of transition, where both sides have been trying to work out their future relationship. This transition period is coming to an end on the 31st of December – but no matter the outcome, we want you to know we’re fully prepared. 

Whatever happens, you’ll still be able to use our smart and connected service to continue to do things like:
- Sending and receiving money, locally and internationally
- Using your card to pay in-store or online, or withdraw from ATMs
- Topping up your account with cash (in any country this is already available in)
- Using your app in any of the 14 languages we support, and chatting to our multilingual support team

### Is this going to affect me?
Last year, we worked with our licensing partner to create a new regulated entity in Belgium. We set this up so that we can provide you with the same level of service after Brexit. Since then, most of our customers from across Europe received new and improved [European account numbers](https://monese.com/gb/en/blog/new-eu-iban-account-number), and those of you who live in Romania are set up with local [Romanian account numbers](https://monese.com/gb/en/blog/ron-accounts). And we’ve started rolling out [French account numbers](https://monese.com/gb/en/blog/french-iban-account-number)!

From next year, many of you won’t see any changes to how your account or card works. But some will see some small changes. For example:

- If you live in the UK and have a RON account, we may have to move it under our EU licensing partner
- If you don’t live in the UK and you have a GBP currency account that you haven’t been using for a while, we’ll ask you if you want to keep using it moving forward 
- If you live in the European Economic Area and your EUR account number starts with GB, we may update your IBAN 

If you’re a Monese customer, we’ll send you any important details via email, and we’ll be in touch with anything else you need to know as this transition period comes to an end.

### Your French account number

Our French account numbers come packed with features that let you spend, send and save like a true local:

__Direct Debits__
You can now set up Direct Debits from your EUR account – you’ll be able to pay your bills in France and across Europe by setting up SEPA Direct Debits. Direct Debits give you peace of mind that your bills are being paid automatically, so you never miss a payment. 

__Cash top-ups__
You can also now top up your Monese account with cash! We’ve partnered with [Paysafecash](https://monese.com/blog/2020/07/add-cash-paysafe) so you can add cash to your Monese account from nearly 12,000 payment points throughout the country. 

__Receive your salary__
Receiving your salary in your Monese account has never been easier. Even though you [should already be able to use](https://monese.com/blog/2020/03/iban-discrimination) your existing account number for this, we’ve heard from some of you that a French account number is preferred by your employers. All you need to do is give them your new account number – it can easily be shared with anyone, by tapping on ‘Share’ from the ‘Accounts details’ page. 

__Link your PayPal account__
You can also [link your Monese account to PayPal](https://monese.com/eu/blog/2019/07/monese-with-paypal) to easily view your PayPal transactions right in your Monese app, and quickly add your Monese card to your PayPal digital wallet for extra security while you’re shopping online (without having to enter your card details).

### How to get started

Before we get you set up with a French account number, we’ll need you to upload a second ID document – this is to make sure we comply with local regulations.
It’s important to note that there won’t be any changes to how your Monese account and card works – and you’ll still be able use your original GB account number to receive payments.

If you’re just joining Monese now, you’ll be able to get a French account number right away.

If you've already got a Monese account, we’ll have your French account number available soon. We've already started the roll-out process, so make sure to keep an eye on your app and on your email inbox for next steps.

Your EUR account will start with the letters ‘FR’. You’ll find your French account number, BIC code and RIB key in your Monese EUR account under ‘Account details’ (you can find it just below your balance) on your app’s home screen. You can also find it in the ‘Account’ menu at the top left corner.

And remember that to upgrade, you’ll need to have the latest version of our app.

Bonjour, French account numbers

Here’s everything you need to know about our new French account numbers (or IBANs) for customers living in France

Today easyJet announced a cyber-security attack that could have exposed the personal details of up to 9 million customers.

The company has said that email addresses and travel details were accessed and that they’ll be contacting everyone affected by this. Their statement also mentioned that 2,208 people have had their card details stolen.

We’re working on contacting all of you who’ve completed transactions with easyJet so that you can be extra vigilant.



## What we know so far
Since your safety and security is always our top priority, we’ve been keeping up with the latest information and will continue to do so in the coming days. Here’s what we know:

- EasyJet announced they’ve discovered a “highly sophisticated” cyber-security attack that exposed 9 million customers’ personal details
- 2,208 people may have had their card details stolen
- EasyJet plans to contact all affected customers by the 26th of May, but say they’ve already contacted anyone who may have had their card details stolen
- They’ve stressed that there’s no evidence that any personal information has been misused


## What information was breached?
While easyJet has said there isn’t any evidence of data being misused, it’s important to note the types of personal data accessed: email addresses, travel details and some credit card details, including CVV codes.



## What we’re doing about it
Security is our utmost priority, and we want to let you know that we’ve always got your back. When there’s a customer data breach like this, we always check to make sure your money is safe. Since easyJet’s announcement, we’ve been running checks for all our customers’ accounts, looking for any suspicious or unusual activity. We’ll let you know if we find anything. In the meantime, as mentioned above, we’re contacting all our customers who’ve completed transactions with easyJet so that they can be extra vigilant.



## What you should do
If you’ve been affected in any way, easyJet should get in touch with you within the next week to let you know. You can also contact easyJet via their [support page](https://www.easyjet.com/en/help/contact). A [page on their website](https://www.easyjet.com/en/infoalert) dedicated to this matter also suggests you email them at infoalert@easyjet.com.

If you’ve already been notified by easyJet that your card details have been exposed, please lock your card from the app right away, and get in touch with our [Support team](https://monese.com/contact) — we’ll cancel your card and send out a new one to you at no cost.

And since email addresses and travel details were accessed, we also recommend staying extra vigilant and looking more closely for any potential phishing scams, spam emails or any out of the ordinary communications.

### What happened?
Thomas Cook, the 178-year-old tour operator, has [collapsed](https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-49791249), leaving hundreds of thousands of holidaymakers stranded abroad.

### What can I do?

If you've booked your holiday from the UK, you should be protected by the Civil Aviation Authority’s [ATOL scheme](https://www.caa.co.uk/atol-protection/consumers/about-atol/) (which stands for Air Travel Organiser’s Licence). This should support you if you're currently abroad, and reimburse the cost of replacing parts of your ATOL protected holiday.

### Can Monese help if I'm already abroad?

We appreciate that anyone already abroad may face some unexpected expenses as they try to get home.

If you’re caught up in this, we realise these days can be incredibly difficult and stressful for you. The last thing you want to deal with is unplanned costs like ATM withdrawal fees and costs on foreign currency card spending.

### What about a future booking?
If you’ve got any future flight bookings with Thomas Cook, that are now cancelled and *not* ATOL protected, you may still be able to make a claim via Monese – __we can request a chargeback on your behalf__. They all come with a free Monese card, a free secondary EUR or GBP account, free debit card top-ups – plus free instant transfers between all Monese users, without any kinds of fees, including currency exchange.

Then, you’ll get tailored, fee-free, allowances for global ATM withdrawals, cash top-ups and foreign currency spending. Here are the details:

- The first allowance covers how much cash you can withdraw from ATMs anywhere in the world and how much cash you can top up your account with each month, before paying any fees
- The second allowance covers how much you can spend on your Monese card in foreign currencies, before paying any fees

Here’s a run-down of each plan in more detail.

### Simple

Our Simple plan is a great one to get you started, and works perfectly if you just need a current account to receive your salary or a card for your travels. It is free and has no monthly fee, and it gives you a neat allowance of free ATM withdrawals, cash top-ups, and foreign currency card spend:

- 2% fee for international transfers in foreign currencies

### Classic

Our Classic plan is best for those who use Monese as their main account, or use cash and international transfers frequently. It costs £4.95 a month, and unlocks even bigger allowances that cover more cash top-ups and ATM withdrawals, and more spending on your card in foreign currencies:

- £/€ 800 allowance for free ATM withdrawals globally and cash top-ups each month (after which a 2% fee applies)
- £/€ 8,000 allowance for fee-free card spend in foreign currencies globally each month (after which a 2% fee applies)
- 0.5% fee for international transfers in foreign currencies (can be more for some currencies)

### Premium

Our Premium plan is the ultimate Monese account, which gives you total peace of mind if you’re spending a lot across different countries and currencies or often transfer larger amounts abroad. It costs £14.95 a month, and gives you a truly unlimited allowance for any and all transactions – meaning you pay a one-off monthly fee and get everything for free thereafter:

- Free global ATM withdrawals and cash top-ups
- Unlimited global fee-free card spend in foreign currencies
- Zero fees for international transfers in foreign currencies

## New cards to match your plan

From now on, your Monese cards will match the pricing plan you’re on, rather than the currency of the account they’re linked to – and they come in beautiful combinations of sheer whites and subtly textured blues.

We have also chosen a more aesthetically pleasing vertical design format – because horizontal cards with embossed numbers are quickly becoming a thing of the past, having been originally created to meet the needs of old (now obsolete) card reading tech.

Enter our Simple card – sporting a bright pearl base and a shimmering metallic Monese logo that comes in blue, matching the magnetic strip on the back. Then there’s our Classic card, which wears our trademark blue over a pearl base coat, and has a silver foil for the Monese logo, the magnetic strip and card’s edging. And finally, our Premium card comes in a deep midnight blue, with a textured sparkle; you’ll immediately notice the gleaming holographic foil logo, that matches the card’s edging.

## Make safe and fast payments
Using Apple Pay is simple, and it works with the devices you use every day. You can use it on iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad and Mac to make fast and convenient purchases in stores, in apps and on websites.

When you make a purchase, Apple Pay uses a device-specific number and unique transaction code. Your full card number is never stored on your device or on Apple servers, and it can’t be shared with merchants. Apple Pay doesn’t keep transaction information that can be tied back to you, ensuring all purchases are private.

## How to set it up
Simply open the Monese app and navigate to the ‘Card’ screen. There you’ll be able to tap the ‘Add to Apple Wallet’ button and follow the instructions. Then just open your Apple Wallet and your Monese card will appear there, ready for use.

Or you can set it up in the Wallet app – here's how to get started:

- On iPhone, open the Wallet app and tap the “+” sign
- For Apple Watch, open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone and select “Wallet & Apple Pay”, then tap “Add Credit or Debit Card”

## Do we really think there will be a post-Brexit apocalypse? 
Of course we don’t. 

And we don't expect a meteorite to wreck havoc on London anytime soon. Our installation, and our associated campaign posters, are a light-hearted response to some of the more extreme speculation on what life could be like in the UK on and after the Brexit date of 29 March 2019.

For example, in September, the UK was warned that it would be the last European country to know if there’s a meteorite approaching Earth, because it would have exited the European Union’s Space Surveillance and Tracking Programme. We thought this was pretty crazy stuff and it inspired us to get creative with our campaign.

## But seriously... 
It’s a time of uncertainty in the UK right now. So we also wanted to use this campaign to share our simple and clear message with you: whatever happens, we should all continue to build solutions to keep us connected. That’s what we’re doing at Monese, leading the way in keeping the UK and rest of Europe connected with our portable, dual-currency UK and European personal accounts.

Whatever happens on or after the key Brexit date of 29 March 2019, many people will continue to travel the world, study abroad or work in another country. They will need their finances to stay connected. We believe that your money should be there for you every step of the way. 

We’ve always held this view. You may even remember our Free Movement campaign from last year, which focused on the launch of our European accounts.

## What does Brexit mean for me? 
We understand that Brexit poses some very serious questions for some of our customers. At this stage we still don’t know what Brexit will look like. We promise to communicate clearly with all of you so you understand what you should do and who you should speak to if you are concerned about staying connected. 

## How is Monese keeping me connected?

On Thursday, British Airways [provided further information](http://mediacentre.britishairways.com/pressrelease/details/86/2018-247/10234?ref=News "British Airways Media Centre") about a breach of customer data, which it had announced on 6 September 2018. An internal investigation by the airline has shown that additional personal data, of those not previously notified, may have been compromised. This additional data may have included card details.
A number of our customers may have been affected. We’ve been in touch with all of these customers to let them know that their card details may have been accessed. We are cancelling and reissuing the cards of all potentially affected customers. We did this for our customers back in September, when British Airways first announced the breach, and we are doing the same today. 

### What information was breached?
Whilst British Airways has stated that there is no evidence that any data has been misused, it’s important to note that the airline is currently notifying the holders of 77,000 payment cards, not previously notified, that the name, billing address, email address, card payment information, including card number, expiry date and CVV have potentially been compromised, and a further 108,000 without CVV. Your CVV number is the three digit number on the back of your card. The potentially impacted customers were those only making reward bookings between April 21 and July 28, 2018, and who used a payment card.

### What are we doing about it?
At Monese security is our utmost priority and we want to let you know that we’ve always got your back. When there’s a customer data breach like this, we always check to ensure you, your details and your finances are safe. Since the British Airways announcement we ran checks for all our customers. A number of our customers had transacted with British Airways. We’ve been in touch with all of these customers to let them know that their card details may have been accessed. We are cancelling and reissuing the cards of all potentially affected customers. 

We also checked these customer accounts for any suspicious or unusual activity and we found no suspicious transactions, nor did we find any reports for unauthorised transactions. 

### What should you do?
British Airways is contacting those customers that are potentially affected by this breach. If you have not heard anything from British Airways by 5pm GMT on Friday, 26 October, you do not need to do anything. __That said, we will still cancel and reissue your Monese card, at no expense to you.__ If you’re among those affected, you will have received an email from us, with details on this.

British Airways announced that email addresses may also have been compromised as part of this breach. We recommend that you watch out for potential phishing scams, spam emails, or any out of the ordinary communications.

Yesterday Cathay Pacific announced it had discovered suspicious activity on its network back in March 2018, and confirmed unauthorised access to some personal data in early May.
A very small number of our customers may have been affected. We’ve been in touch with all of them to let them know that, according to the Cathay Pacific statement, their card details should not have been accessed as part of this breach.

### What information was breached?
Whilst Cathay Pacific has stated that there is no evidence that any data has been misused, it’s important to note that the following types of personal data of Cathay Pacific and Cathay Dragon passengers were accessed: passenger name; nationality; date of birth; phone number; email; address; passport number; identity card number; frequent flyer programme membership number; customer service remarks; and historical travel information. The combination of data accessed varied for each affected passenger, but no-one’s travel or loyalty profile was accessed in full, and no passwords were compromised.

### What are we doing about it?

### What about passport details?
Cathay Pacific announced that passport details may have been compromised as part of this breach. Your passport details are incredibly sensitive.
If you believe you may have been affected, you can[ submit a request to Cathay Pacific](https://infosecurity.cathaypacific.com/cx/en_HK/hidden-pages/important_info_data_security_event_row.html "Info Security: Cathay Pacific) here and the airline will tell you if it has identified your personal data as having been accessed. Cathay Pacific is also offering ID monitoring services to affected passengers.
If Cathay Pacific confirms that your passport details have been affected, we also recommend that you check with your passport issuer on the steps you should take next.

With the sun shining without interruption across much of Europe, many of our holiday plans are now in full swing.

Being a financial service, we’re probably not the best go-to source for general travel advice, at least in terms of recommending destinations (although we’re confident enough in extolling the virtues of wearing lots of sunscreen).

Wherever you choose to holiday this year however, we’re happy to offer you a few tips on how to use your card while travelling abroad.

### Pay in the local currency

First off, we recommend paying in the local currency whenever possible. Holidaymakers collectively and unknowingly amass millions of pounds in unnecessary fees when paying by card due to something called [‘dynamic currency conversion’ (DCC)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynamic_currency_conversion "Wikipedia"). These are alternative exchange rates offered by firms handling transactions in anything other than the local currency. 

In real terms, a round of drinks at a beach bar could be costing you [up to 18% more](https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/team-blog/2016/07/the-worst-paying-in-pounds-abroad-rip-off-ive-seen-where-160-of-cash-costs-190/ "Money saving expert: The worst ‘paying in pounds abroad’ rip-off I’ve seen – where £160 of cash costs £190"). This applies to both card payments and ATM withdrawals.

Choosing to pay in the local currency means your home bank handles the currency conversion - which means it will be far more closely aligned to the ‘true’ currency conversion rate, therefore making it far cheaper in most cases. This is especially true when managing your money with Monese, where you access our wholesale currency exchange rate and low fees.

### Lock your card 

Another good idea, specific to the use of your Monese card, is to keep your card locked whenever you’re not using it. Locking your card is an easy-to-use security feature accessible within the Monese app. One thing to remember, however, is that you will need data connectivity on your phone in order to unlock. With this in mind, it’s also a good idea to keep your phone charged.

Locking your card is also the first thing you should do if you misplace your card. That way, if someone tries to illicitly use it, they won’t be able to complete any transactions and the app will immediately let you know about any unsuccessful attempts.

### Carry a spare card

While it’s generally a good recommendation to travel light financially, you may also want to consider packing another card. As a Monese user, we can quickly provide you with the means to do this. By opening a free secondary Euro IBAN account (or UK current account if you already have the Euro IBAN account) you can order a Euro card as back-up, and you’ll be able to transfer funds to it from your primarily Monese account in-app, instantly.
