Selling lockdown purchases V2

Admit it: we all went a little overboard when it came to our lockdown splurges over the past year. Whether you invested a little too much in at-home workout gear, home office equipment or several new video games to keep you from going stir crazy, you might be left wondering what to do with all your new purchases now. As lockdown restrictions ease in the UK, we may no longer need all the items that got us through lockdown.

So with that in mind, we put together this useful guide on how to tackle all those extra items taking space in your home and get them ready for selling online.

Make a plan

First, make a list of all the items you want to sell. Inspect the condition of all your things and make sure everything is working as it should. Try and make your objects as “sell-ready” as possible. Find all original receipts, manuals, handbooks, accessories and guarantees that might still apply to your items — this will help you sell for the best price.

Pick your platform

Some of the most popular sites to sell your items online include Amazon, eBay, Etsy, Craigslist, OLX and Ziffit. There are even apps for selling online, like Depop and Shpock. Some platforms are also better than others for selling specific items, so consider this when choosing your platform:

  • eBay is good for electronics, antiques, jewelry, designer shoes, vintage clothing and handbags.
  • Old records and books are great to sell on Amazon.
  • Art, crafts and wall decor do well on Etsy.
  • Ziffit is good for selling games, books, CDs and DVDs.
  • Sell clothing on Depop.
  • Shpock is great for home appliances, electronics and clothing.
  • Facebook groups might work better for old furniture.

On this note, don’t discount social media platforms or your networks like your friends and followers on Instagram. Try Facebook Marketplace or even reaching out to colleagues first. Many companies have a marketplace Slack channel where you can easily buy or sell things from people you know and trust. If you can't find one, start one!

Create your listing

The more detailed your descriptions are, the more likely you are to sell your items. Pick keywords and your category wisely. Also, be honest about things such as the condition of your items. People looking for things to buy online are usually okay with purchasing second-hand, as long as you're accurate with the state of your objects. Buyers need to know just what they're getting for their money.

Be sure to include plenty of high-quality photographs, too, as part of your listing — this is especially important if you’re selling clothing or jewelry. You may even want to consider modeling your clothing and accessories on yourself or a mannequin, so buyers can visualise what the items will look like on.

Consider shipping costs

Before you add a price tag to your listing, make sure you account for any packaging and shipping costs for mailing your items. Otherwise, this could easily eat into any profit you hope to make. eBay, for example, offers a postage estimator service. If sending from the UK, check out the Royal Mail’s price finder for a calculation. It’s also good to research to compare prices for similar items selling online.

Once you’ve settled on a price, make it easy for your buyers to pay you by sharing your Monese account details. You can easily do this straight from your app. Invite them to sign up for Monese; this way, your payment will be instant! Or, if they pay you through PayPal, link your PayPal to Monese so you can see all your earnings all in one app.

Stash your earnings

monese-pots-save-1 Now that you’ve gotten rid of all your things and made some extra money, the last thing you’ll want to do is misspend it all again! Why not use that money to start an emergency fund instead and put it towards one of your pots to set money aside for something that matters? With Monese, you can create up to 10 different pots to put money away for more than one thing at a time. Round up your transactions and even multiply by up to 10 to help you reach your money goals even faster.

We hope these tips will help you get your home decluttered this spring. What was your biggest expense during lockdown? Of all the things you bought, what items will you be keeping, and which will you be selling? Let us know on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or drop us a line at community@monese.com.

Good luck!
