Say hello to RON accounts

Anyone can open a Monese account in a matter of minutes, and use it to spend like a local all over Europe - from today, this includes Romania!

If you've got a Romania-issued ID, you can now open a new RON currency account, with a fully local Romanian account number (IBAN) and a RON debit card!

Why create a RON account?

Spend like a local

Monese accounts in GBP and EUR have already been available for some time - but if you live in Romania, even though the allowances are generous, you may not be comfortable with effectively exchanging currency on each transaction. With your new RON account, you’ll be able to shop, spend and save like a true local, using the country’s currency, the Romanian Leu.

Send and receive money locally

Speaking of local, you’ll now be able to make free local transfers to other banks in the country and even easily receive your salary into your account! Or if you need to make regular transfers to pay your bills, you can set up recurring payments in RON.

Instant and free transfers between Monese accounts

Send, receive and request payments easily and instantly from your family and friends who also have a Monese account - it’s absolutely free! So if you live in Bucharest and you need to send some cash to a friend in London, a payment from your Monese RON account to their Monese GBP account will be instant and fee-free.

A contactless debit card in the local currency

When you open your Monese RON account, you’ll be able to order one of our beautifully designed Monese cards, depending on the plan you choose. Our cards are prepaid debit Mastercards, which you can use to spend or withdraw money anywhere in the world. Here are some cool things you can do:

• Make safe online transactions when shopping online.
• Lock and unlock your card straight from the app — so if you ever lose your card, you can rest assured your money will stay safe.
• Make contactless payments.
• Set up your Monese card with Apple Pay for a more secure, private and simple way to pay.

How to open your RON account

If you’re already on board with us, then adding a RON account is easy and takes just a couple of taps:

• On the home screen, tap the ‘Account’ button (on the top left-hand side).
• Then tap ‘Add account’.
• Select RON, follow the instructions, and you’ll have it in no-time.

Keep in mind that right now, RON accounts are available to anyone who has a Romanian ID document. They’re part of the latest app version, so you'll need to update your Monese app to see them.
